Music is composed as summation of nature’s sound and the sound of animals. these various sounds help Music to prepare the notes. The Hindustani Music and its history says us the same.
Present day If we look at music we find that it gives us sense of peace, harmony and mental strength and may prove to be cure of various health ailments with the infusion of natural sounds like stream, wind, rain etc. The raw sound coming from nature encourages us to think of musical sound which gives us pleasure in terms of concentration, dedication, determination and discipline.
Now days the classroom music teaching has become monotonous. We are playing instruments and singing inside the classroom to prepare a choir and solo. That is what is tone and tune, how to sing in a choir and what is Soprano, Alto, Toner and Bass with the pitch etc.
Music itself says “Sing or play with heart, not with mind” so where we get the help to create the Music with heart. Obvious that, the theory with grammar should be there to learn basic, but basic is alphabet of music with the help of these we form words then sentences as we are learning in other languages too. But if you don’t know the meaning of the words you can’t make a sentences , where if you don’t know the tones do re mi fa so la ti do and sa re ga ma pa dha ni sa you will be not able to make a words of tune. OK learn basic go through books, your Masters will teach you the pattern, but the sense of music will come through NATURE only.
The Indian Ragas are based on type of seasons, natural ambience, pace, sounds, and rhythms.
Not so easy to understand these vast topics but I think very easy to feel it with heart. NEST (Nature, Environment, Science and Technology) says “Break four walls around you and mix with nature” yes, with this, you will learn with heart not mug up learning (Rot Learning).
In the winter feel cool air, pleasant nature and choose the tone matched with it. You will find a great feeling with nature and Music.
Come out from a classroom sit under a tree and see the leaves are floating with a rhythm. The streams have a beautiful sound with its speed. The wind has some sweet feelings and you start co-up with these. You will start learning Music.
Hindustani Music has lot of ragas based on part of the day and part of the night too, as it’s called ‘PRAHAR’. One example I would like to share with you “raga Iman is an evening raga and it says to overcome ego” The Lord Shiva Standing on a demon namely “Ahankar”. Accordingly with times, Ragas can sing at mid night, early morning and with the seasons too. Lot of ragas are made for the seasons only to focus the nature of the seasons through the swaras. Like Deepak, Sarang, Ashabari etc.
Example 2- One song from Gurudev Rabindra Nath Tagore Geetobitan I would like to Share i.e. “ Esho Shyama;a Sundara” based on raga desh calling nature to fulfill the thrust of nature.
“Nature is Obvious to learning Music (Vocal and Instrumentals)
Another example I would like to share, for the kids if we will sing the famous rhymes “Twinkle Twinkle” inside the class room, how we will make them understand the fact of twinkling instead of take them outside in the evening to show the actual meaning of “Twinkling”. As well as for the song “All things bright and beautiful” will make us face the same problem.
I would like to conclude my small knowledge regarding “Music with Nature” with few thoughts-
- Explore how various orchestral instruments mimic sounds of nature, Timpani as Thunder, a Harp as flowing Water, A Flute as Birds, Sitar and santoor as Streams and Tabla as feelings of natural beats.
- Do Unconventional Orchestra; we can say Nature Concert, How? Make a shaker from stone, Tap two stick together use Grass Blade for Whistling, Use Bucket for Drum, use any Plate, glass, spoons for Xylophone and many more.
- Play music and tell students to draw a mind scene. Invite individual to create their creation. Ask them compare the music with nature, like forest, Wind, Water, field in our lives.
- After studying environmental topics, choose a common tune and have students rewrite the lyric with their own creation and reflect their new found knowledge.
